The Tranquility of the Heart
(Qur’anic Perspective)

Remembering Allah and Showing Gratitude
Arabic:
فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
Transliteration:
Fa-udhkurūnī adhkurkum wa-ushkurū lī wa-lā takfurūn
Translation:
"So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful." (Al-Baqarah 152)

Remembering Allah in Every State
Arabic:
الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Transliteration:
Alladhīna yadhkurūna Allāha qiyāman wa-quʿūdan wa-ʿalā junūbihim wa-yatafakkarūna fī khalqi al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ, rabbanā mā khalaqta hādhā bāṭilan subḥānaka fa-qinā ʿadhāba al-nār
Translation:
"Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying: 'Our Lord, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You; so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'" (Āl ʿImrān 191)
Arabic:
وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ تَضَرُّعًا وَخِيفَةً وَدُونَ الْجَهْرِ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ وَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ الْغَافِلِينَ
Transliteration:
Wa-udhkur rabbaka fī nafsika taḍarruʿan wa-khīfatan wa-dūna al-jahri mina al-qawli bi-al-ghudūwi wa-al-āṣāl wa-lā takun mina al-ghāfilīn
Translation:
"And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and fear, and without loudness in words, in the mornings and the evenings; and do not be among the heedless." (Al-Aʿrāf 205)

Hearts Find Peace in the Remembrance of Allah
Arabic:
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
Transliteration:
Alladhīna āmanū wa-taṭmaʾinnu qulūbuhum bi-dhikri Allāh, alā bi-dhikri Allāhi taṭmaʾinnu al-qulūb
Translation:
"Those who believe and whose hearts find tranquility in the remembrance of Allah. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find tranquility." (Al-Raʿd 28)

Prayer Prevents Immorality and Evil
Arabic:
اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ ۖ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ ۗ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ
Transliteration:
Utlu mā ūḥiya ilayka mina al-kitābi wa-aqimi al-ṣalāh, inna al-ṣalāta tanhā ʿani al-faḥshāʾi wa-al-munkar, wa-la-dhikru Allāhi akbar, wa-Allāhu yaʿlamu mā taṣnaʿūn
Translation:
"Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer restrains from immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows what you do." (Al-ʿAnkabūt 45)

Remember Allah Abundantly
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا
وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا
Transliteration:
Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū udhkurū Allāha dhikran kathīrā
Wa-sabbiḥūhu bukratan wa-aṣīlā
Translation:
"O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify Him morning and evening." (Al-Aḥzāb 41–42)

Hearts Should Become Humble at the Remembrance of Allah
Arabic:
أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ
Transliteration:
Alam yaʾni li-alladhīna āmanū an takhshaʿa qulūbuhum li-dhikri Allāhi wa-mā nazala mina al-ḥaqqi wa-lā yakūnū ka-alladhīna ūtū al-kitāba min qablu fa-ṭāla ʿalayhimu al-amadu fa-qasat qulūbuhum, wa-kathīrun minhum fāsiqūn
Translation:
"Has the time not yet come for those who believe that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Allah and what has been revealed of the truth, and that they should not be like those who were given the Scripture before them, for whom a long time passed and their hearts became hardened? And many of them are defiantly disobedient." (Al-Ḥadīd 16)

Responding to the Call for Friday Prayer
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَانتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
Transliteration:
Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā nūdiya li-al-ṣalāti min yawmi al-jumuʿati fa-sʿaw ilā dhikri Allāhi wa-dharū al-bayʿ, dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn
Fa-idhā quḍiyati al-ṣalātu fa-intashirū fī al-arḍi wa-abtaghū min faḍli Allāhi wa-udhkurū Allāha kathīran laʿallakum tufliḥūn
Translation:
"O you who believe, when the call to prayer is proclaimed on the Day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you if you only knew. Then when the prayer is concluded, disperse through the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often so that you may succeed." (Al-Jumuʿah 9–10)

Wealth and Children Should Not Distract from Allah
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ
Transliteration:
Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tulhikum amwālukum wa-lā awlādukum ʿan dhikri Allāh, wa-man yafʿal dhālika fa-ulāʾika humu al-khāsirūn
Translation:
"O you who believe, let not your wealth or your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that — then those are the losers." (Al-Munāfiqūn 9)

Remembering Allah Morning and Night
Arabic:
وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا
وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَاسْجُدْ لَهُ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا
Transliteration:
Wa-udhkur isma rabbika bukratan wa-aṣīlā
Wa-mina al-layli fa-sjud lahu wa-sabbiḥhu laylan ṭawīlā
Translation:
"And remember the name of your Lord morning and evening. And during the night prostrate to Him and glorify Him throughout the long night." (Al-Insān 25–26)

Success Through Purification and Remembrance
Arabic:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّىٰ
Transliteration:
Qad aflaḥa man tazakkā
Wa-dhakara isma rabbihi fa-ṣallā
Translation:
"He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself, and remembers the name of his Lord and performs prayer." (Al-Aʿlā 14–15)

Remembering Allah After Prayer
Arabic:
فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمْ ۚ فَإِذَا اطْمَأْنَنتُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ ۚ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا
Transliteration:
Fa-idhā qaḍaytumu al-ṣalāta fa-udhkurū Allāha qiyāman wa-quʿūdan wa-ʿalā junūbikum, fa-idhā iṭmaʾnantum fa-aqīmū al-ṣalāh, inna al-ṣalāta kānat ʿalā al-muʾminīna kitāban mawqūtā
Translation:
"And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on your sides. Then when you are secure, establish the prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times." (Al-Nisāʾ 103)

Remembering Allah If One Forgets
Arabic:
وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَيْءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذَٰلِكَ غَدًا
إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ
Transliteration:
Wa-lā taqūlanna li-shayʾin innī fāʿilun dhālika ghadā
Illā an yashāʾa Allāh, wa-udhkur rabbaka idhā nasīt
Translation:
"And never say of anything, 'Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,' except by saying, 'If Allah wills.' And remember your Lord when you forget." (Al-Kahf 23–24)

Those Who Remember Allah Often
Arabic:
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَانتَصَرُوا مِن بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا
Transliteration:
Illā alladhīna āmanū wa-ʿamilū al-ṣāliḥāti wa-dhakarū Allāha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū
Translation:
"Except those who believe and perform righteous deeds and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they have been wronged." (Al-Shuʿarāʾ 227)

The Messenger as the Best Example
Arabic:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا
Transliteration:
Laqad kāna lakum fī rasūli Allāhi uswatun ḥasanah li-man kāna yarjū Allāha wa-al-yawma al-ākhira wa-dhakara Allāha kathīrā
Translation:
"There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often." (Al-Aḥzāb 21)

The Virtues of Believing Men and Women
Arabic:
إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْقَانِتِينَ وَالْقَانِتَاتِ وَالصَّادِقِينَ وَالصَّادِقَاتِ وَالصَّابِرِينَ وَالصَّابِرَاتِ وَالْخَاشِعِينَ وَالْخَاشِعَاتِ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقَاتِ وَالصَّائِمِينَ وَالصَّائِمَاتِ وَالْحَافِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمْ وَالْحَافِظَاتِ وَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
Transliteration:
Inna al-muslimīna wa-al-muslimāti wa-al-muʾminīna wa-al-muʾmināti wa-al-qānitīna wa-al-qānitāti wa-al-ṣādiqīna wa-al-ṣādiqāti wa-al-ṣābirīna wa-al-ṣābirāti wa-al-khāshiʿīna wa-al-khāshiʿāti wa-al-mutaṣaddiqīna wa-al-mutaṣaddiqāti wa-al-ṣāʾimīna wa-al-ṣāʾimāti wa-al-ḥāfiẓīna furūjahum wa-al-ḥāfiẓāti wa-al-dhākirīna Allāha kathīran wa-al-dhākirāt aʿadda Allāhu lahum maghfiratan wa-ajran ʿaẓīmā
Translation:
"Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their chastity and the women who guard it, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who remember Him — for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward." (Al-Aḥzāb 35)

Devotion Exclusively to Allah
Arabic:
وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا
Transliteration:
Wa-udhkur isma rabbika wa-tabattal ilayhi tabtīlā
Translation:
"And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion." (Al-Muzzammil 8)
