Blessed Appearance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (In the Light of Hadith)

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was neither very tall nor short in stature. His complexion was neither extremely white nor dark wheat-colored. His hair was neither very curly nor completely straight. Allah sent him as a Messenger when he reached forty years of age. At that time, there were only about twenty white hairs in his head and beard. Another narration mentions that he was of medium height—neither tall nor short—with a bright and radiant complexion, and his hair reached halfway to his ears; in another narration, it reached between the ears and the shoulders.

A narration in Sahih al-Bukhari states that his blessed head was large, and there was flesh on his feet. The narrator said, “I have not seen anyone like him before or after him.” Another narration mentions that his palms were full and fleshy.

Jabir ibn Samurah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a broad mouth, and the whiteness of his eyes was tinged with redness. His heels were lean and not fleshy.

Anas رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a bright and shining complexion, and his perspiration resembled pearls. When he walked, he leaned slightly forward. I have never touched silk or brocade softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor have I smelled musk or amber more fragrant than the scent of his blessed body.

Jabir رضي الله عنه reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed through a path, a person coming afterward could recognize that he had passed from the fragrance of his body or perspiration.

Ka‘b ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt joy over any matter, his blessed face would shine as though it were a piece of the moon, and we were well aware of it.

Jabir ibn Samurah رضي الله عنه reported that the calves of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were lean and delicate. He would not laugh loudly. When I looked at him, it seemed as if he had applied kohl to his eyes, although he had not.

The Companions رضي الله عنهم tried to describe the blessed appearance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in words. In reality, it is something that cannot be fully captured by language. They were aware of this, yet they expressed it in words so that later generations could receive some understanding—though the true beauty of that sight lies far beyond the limits of description.
