Finality of Prophethood (In the Light of Hadith)

Ali رضي الله عنه reported that the Seal of Prophethood was between the shoulders of the Prophet ﷺ, and he is the Seal of the Prophets.

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“My example and the example of the prophets before me is like a building whose structure and walls were beautifully completed, except for the place of one brick. People walk around it, admiring its beauty, but wonder about the missing brick. I am that brick. With me the building has been completed and the chain of messengers has ended.”

Saad ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to Ali رضي الله عنه:
“You hold to me the same position that Harun held to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Messengership and prophethood have come to an end. After me there will be neither a messenger nor a prophet.” This weighed heavily on the Companions, so he said: “Glad tidings remain.” They asked: “What are glad tidings?” He said: “The righteous dream of a Muslim, and it is a part from the parts of prophethood.”

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Among the nations before you there were people who were inspired. If there is any such person in my Ummah, it is Umar ibn al-Khattab.”

Uqbah ibn Amir رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“If there were to be a prophet after me, it would have been Umar ibn al-Khattab.”
(Jami at-Tirmidhi)

Thawban رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“In the future, thirty great liars will arise in my Ummah. Each of them will claim that he is a prophet, but I am the last of the prophets. There is no prophet after me.”
(Jami at-Tirmidhi)

Belief in the finality of the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is an essential part of the faith of every Muslim. He is the last Prophet, and no prophet or messenger will come after him until the Day of Judgment.

In earlier times, prophets were sent to specific nations and for limited periods, and their mission was confined to particular peoples. However, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a prophet for all of humanity, and his prophethood remains until the Day of Judgment. Allah never left His servants without guidance, and today, the responsibility of conveying guidance rests with the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. Each member of this Ummah is called to invite toward righteousness and to discourage wrongdoing.
