Using Abusive Language (In the Light of Hadith)

“Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: A man’s abusing his parents is among the major sins. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Can a person abuse his own parents? He ﷺ said: Yes. A man abuses another’s father, and in response he abuses his father; and he abuses another’s mother, and in response he abuses his mother—thus by abusing another’s parents he causes his own parents to be abused.” (Sahih Muslim)

“Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Abusing a Muslim is فسق (disobedience), and killing him is disbelief.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

“Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The sin of two people who abuse one another falls upon the one who initiated it, so long as the oppressed does not transgress.” (Sahih Muslim)

“Hazrat Abu Jari Jabir bin Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, advise me. He ﷺ said: Never abuse anyone. Hazrat Abu Jari says: After that I never abused anyone—neither a free person, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a goat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said: Do not regard any good deed as insignificant (even your speaking to your brother with a cheerful face is included among good deeds). Keep your lower garment raised up to the middle of the calves; if you cannot keep it that high, then at least up to the ankles. Beware of letting the garment hang below, for it is an act of arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance. If someone abuses you or taunts you for something that is in you and he knows it, then do not taunt him for something that is in him and you know it; in that case, the burden of the taunt will remain upon the one who taunted.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

In the Qur’an and Hadith, great honor has been described for a Muslim; but it is regrettable that some Muslims are themselves unaware of their own honor and therefore do not honor others. Whoever has entered the Ummah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been chosen; this honor has not been attained without purpose, and this selection is not of an ordinary being but of the Creator of the universe Himself. In the عالمِ ارواح each soul was examined whether it could become from the Ummah of His Beloved ﷺ or not. Therefore every Muslim is worthy of respect. It is another matter that, due to being involved in sins and bad character, he has soiled himself; yet the inclination to return must still exist within him, and he will inevitably feel remorse over his sins, for ultimately his selection was made by the Creator of the universe for His Beloved ﷺ. It is another matter if a person advances so far in sin that he becomes devoid of every sense. And remember that no matter how many sins he has committed, if he makes sincere repentance before death, he will be forgiven; but if he does not, then remember that there will be punishment for him, for Hell has been created for Muslims; yet no matter how far one advances in sins, we cannot declare anyone to be from the people of Hell. Allah the Exalted is Most Forgiving; He forgives whom He wills. However, the command has come that whoever does not repent will be cast into Hell, even if for some time. If a single link of its chain were to fall upon the earth, it would burn through the entire earth and the earth would not be able to stop it. May Allah guide us all. Ameen.
