بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
اعوذباللہ کی تفسیر
(قرآن وحدیث کی روشنی میں)

اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا ”جب آپ ﷺ قرآن پڑھنے لگیں تو شیطان مردود سے اللہ کی پناہ طلب کیجئے“ (۹۸:۱۶)

قرآن حکیم میں ہے درگزر کرنے کی عادت اپناؤ، بھلائی کا حکم کیا کرو اور جاہلوں سے منہ موڑ لیا کرو۔ اگر شیطان کی طرف سے کوئی وسوسہ آجائے تو اللہ تعالیٰ سننے والے جاننے والے سے پناہ طلب کر لیا کرو۔ اور یہ تو ظاہر ہے کہ پناہ کسی نقصان پہنچانے والی چیز یا دشمن سے درکار ہوتی ہے اور ایسی ہستی سے پناہ طلب کی جاتی ہے جو اس نقصان پہنچانے والے دشمن سے زیادہ طاقتور ہو۔ شیطان چونکہ غیر محسوس طور پر انسان کی فکر پر اثر انداز ہوتا ہے۔ لہٰذا یہ دُعا قرآن کی تلاوت کے دوران کج فکری سے بچنے اور قرآن سے ہدایت حاصل کرنے کی دُعا ہے۔

ایک مقام پر ارشاد ہوتا ہے (اِدْفَعْ بِالَّتِیْ) بُرائی کو بھلائی سے ختم کرو۔ ہم انکے بیانات کو خوب جانتے ہیں۔ کہا کرو اے پروردگار ! شیطان کے وسوسوں اور انکی حاضری سے ہم تیری پناہ چاہتے ہیں۔ یعنی بھلائی کے ساتھ دفع کرو۔ تم میں اور جس دوسرے شخص میں عداوت ہوگی وہ ایسا ہو جائے گا جیسا دلی دوست، یہ کام صبر کرنے والوں اور نصیب داروں کا ہے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے حکم فرمایا ہے کہ انسانوں میں جو تمہاری دشمنی کرے اس کی دشمنی کا علاج تو یہ ہے کہ اسکے ساتھ سلوک واحسان کرو تا کہ اسکی انصاف پسند طبیعت خود اسے شرمندہ کرے اور وہ تمہاری دشمنی سے نہ صرف باز رہے بلکہ تمہارا بہترین دوست بن جائے اور شیطان کی دشمنی سے محفوظ رہنے کیلئے اس نے اپنی پناہ پکڑنی سکھائی۔ کیونکہ یہ پلید دشمن سلوک اور احسان سے بھی قبضہ میں نہیں آتا۔ اسے تو انسان کی تباہی اور بربادی میں ہی مزہ آتا ہے اور اسکی پرانی عداوت حضرت آدم علیہ السلام کے وقت سے ہے۔

قرآن فرماتا ہے اے بنی آدم دیکھو کہیں شیطان تمہیں بھی بہکا نہ دے جس طرح تمہارے ماں باپ کو جنت سے نکلوا دیا۔ ایک مقام پر فرمایا کہ شیطان تمہارا دشمن ہے اسے دشمن ہی سمجھو، اسکی جماعت کی یہی آرزو ہے کہ تم جہنمی ہو جاؤ۔ ایک اور جگہ فرمایا کیا تم اس شیطان کی اور اسکی ذریات (اولاد) کی دوستی کرتے ہو مجھے چھوڑ کر؟ وہ تمہارا دشمن ہے یاد رکھو ظالموں کیلئے بُرا بدلہ ہے، یہی (وہ لعین) ہے جس نے قسم کھا کر ہمارے باپ حضرت آدم علیہ السلام سے کہا تھا کہ میں تمہارا خیر خواہ ہوں۔ ہمارے لئے تو وہ حلف اٹھا کر آیا ہے کہ اللہ رب العزت کی قسم ان سب کو بہکاؤں گا، ہاں ان میں سے جو مخلص بندے ہیں وہ محفوظ رہ جائیں گے۔

حضور ﷺ کے سامنے دو شخص لڑنے لگے، غصہ کے مارے ایک کے نتھنے پھول گئے، آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا اگر یہ اَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ کہہ لے تو اس کا غصہ ابھی جاتا رہے، نسائی، ابوداؤد، ترمذی میں بھی یہ حدیث ہے۔

اعوذ میں عجیب وغریب فوائد ہیں، واہی تباہی باتوں سے منہ میں جو ناپاکی ہوتی ہے وہ اس سے دور ہو جاتی ہے اور منہ کلام اللہ کی تلاوت کے قابل ہو جاتا ہے۔ اسی طرح اس میں اللہ تعالیٰ سے امداد طلب کرنی ہے اور اسکی عظیم الشان قدرتوں کا اقرار کرنا ہے۔ ایک بات یاد رکھیئے کہ جو مسلمان کافروں کے ہاتھ سے مارا جائے، وہ شہید ہے۔ لیکن جو اس باطنی دشمن کے ہاتھ مارا جائے وہ راندہ درگاہ ہے۔ جس پر کفار غالب آجائیں وہ اجر پاتا ہے۔ لیکن جس پر شیطان غالب آجائے وہ ہلاک وبرباد ہو جاتا ہے۔ چونکہ شیطان انسان کو دیکھ سکتا ہے اور انسان اسے نہیں دیکھ سکتا۔ اس لئے قرآنی تعلیم یہ ہے کہ تم اس کی شر سے اسکی پناہ چاہو جو اسے دیکھتا ہے اور یہ اسے نہیں دیکھ سکتا۔

Seeking Refuge Before Reciting the Qur’an
Arabic:
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Transliteration:
Fa-idhā qaraʾta al-Qurʾāna fa-staʿidh bi-Allāhi mina al-shayṭāni al-rajīm
Translation:
"So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed." (Al-Naḥl 98)

Protection from Satanic Whisperings
Arabic:
خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجَاهِلِينَ
وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Transliteration:
Khudhi al-ʿafwa waʾmur bi-al-ʿurfi wa-aʿriḍ ʿani al-jāhilīn
Wa-immā yanzaghannaka mina al-shayṭāni nazghun fa-staʿidh bi-Allāh, innahu samīʿun ʿalīm
Translation:
"Adopt forgiveness, enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant. And if an incitement from Satan should incite you, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (Al-Aʿrāf 199–200)

The Wisdom of Seeking Refuge
It is evident that refuge is sought from something harmful or from an enemy, and such refuge is sought from a being who is more powerful than that enemy. Satan influences the human mind in subtle and unseen ways. Therefore, this supplication is recited during the recitation of the Qur’an so that a person may remain protected from distorted thinking and be able to receive true guidance from the Qur’an.

Repelling Evil with Goodness
Arabic:
ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السَّيِّئَةَ ۚ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ
وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ
وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ
Transliteration:
Idfaʿ bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu al-sayyiʾah, naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaṣifūn
Wa-qul rabbi aʿūdhu bika min hamazāti al-shayāṭīn
Wa-aʿūdhu bika rabbi an yaḥḍurūn
Translation:
"Repel evil with that which is best. We know best what they describe. And say: My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whisperings of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me." (Al-Muʾminūn 96–98)
Through goodness, hostility between people may transform into friendship. This is a quality granted to those who are patient and fortunate.
Allah has instructed that if people show hostility toward you, the remedy is to respond with kindness and good conduct. Such behavior can cause a fair-minded person to feel ashamed of his hostility and may even turn him into a sincere friend.
However, protection from the hostility of Satan requires seeking refuge in Allah, because this impure enemy cannot be subdued through kindness or good treatment. He finds pleasure only in the destruction and ruin of human beings. His enmity toward humanity dates back to the time of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him).

Satan — The Eternal Enemy of Humanity
Arabic:
يَا بَنِي آدَمَ لَا يَفْتِنَنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ كَمَا أَخْرَجَ أَبَوَيْكُم مِّنَ الْجَنَّةِ
Transliteration:
Yā banī Ādama lā yaftinannakumu al-shayṭān kamā akhraja abawaykum mina al-jannah
Translation:
"O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise." (Al-Aʿrāf 27)
Arabic:
إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا
Transliteration:
Inna al-shayṭāna lakum ʿaduwwun fa-ittakhidhūhu ʿaduwwā
Translation:
"Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy." (Fāṭir 6)
Arabic:
أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِن دُونِي وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ
Transliteration:
A-fa-tattakhidhūnahu wa-dhurriyyatahu awliyāʾa min dūnī wa-hum lakum ʿaduww
Translation:
"Will you then take him and his descendants as allies instead of Me while they are enemies to you?" (Al-Kahf 50)
Satan swore that he would lead humanity astray. However, he admitted that he would not succeed against the sincere servants of Allah.

A Hadith Regarding Saying “Aʿūdhu Billāh”
It is reported that two men began quarrelling in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ. One of them became so angry that his nostrils flared. The Prophet ﷺ said: “If he were to say ‘Aʿūdhu billāh,’ his anger would subside immediately.”
(This narration is also reported in Sunan al-Nasāʾī, Sunan Abī Dāwūd, and Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī.)

Benefits of Saying “Aʿūdhu Billāh”
The phrase Aʿūdhu billāh carries profound benefits. Through it, the impurity that enters the mouth through vain or improper speech is removed, and the mouth becomes worthy of reciting the words of Allah.
It also includes seeking assistance from Allah and acknowledging His immense power and authority.
One should remember that a Muslim who is killed by disbelievers becomes a martyr. However, a person who is spiritually destroyed by this internal enemy becomes rejected and deprived. One who is overpowered by disbelievers may still receive reward, but the one who is overcome by Satan becomes ruined and destroyed.
Satan can see human beings while they cannot see him. Therefore, the Qur’anic teaching is that one should seek refuge from his evil with the One who sees him, while Satan cannot see Him.
