The Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr and the Last Ten Days — In the Light of Hadith

Worship in Laylat al-Qadr Leads to Forgiveness of Past Sins:

“Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever stands (in worship) on Laylat al-Qadr with iman (faith) and with the intention of reward, all his past sins will be forgiven.’” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

One Deprived of Laylat al-Qadr Is Truly Unfortunate:

“Hazrat Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrates that when Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘This month has come to you in which there is a night better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its blessing is deprived of all goodness, and none is deprived of the blessing of Laylat al-Qadr except one who is truly unfortunate.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Laylat al-Qadr Should Be Sought in the Odd Nights of the Last Ten Days of Ramadan:

“Hazrat ‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.’” (Sahih Bukhari)

One Should Increase Worship in the Last Ten Days of Ramadan:

“Hazrat ‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها says: ‘In the last ten days of Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would strive in worship more than at any other time.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

“Hazrat ‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها says: ‘When the last ten days of Ramadan began, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., devote himself fully to worship), stay awake at night, and awaken his family as well.’” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Two Important Hadith for Those Unable to Stay Awake the Entire Night:

“Hazrat Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever performs Qiyam with the Imam until he finishes (i.e., completes the congregational prayer), it will be recorded for him as if he stood in worship the entire night.’” (Jami‘ Tirmizi)

“Hazrat ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan رضي الله عنه says: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever performs ‘Isha prayer in congregation, it is as if he has stood in worship for half the night; and whoever performs Fajr prayer in congregation, it is as if he has stood in worship for the entire night.’” (Sahih Muslim)

During Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Increased Recitation of the Quran and Charity in the Path of Allah:

“Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most generous among people in doing good, and he would become even more generous in Ramadan when Jibreel عليه السلام would meet him. In Ramadan, Jibreel عليه السلام would meet him every night, and the Noble Prophet ﷺ would recite the Quran to him until Ramadan ended. When Jibreel عليه السلام met him, his generosity would increase more swiftly than the blowing wind.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
