Quranic Supplications (2) (In the Light of the Noble Quran)

Supplication for Mercy for Parents

رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا (Bani Israil - 24)

Transliteration: Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani sagheera.

“My Lord, have mercy upon them (my parents) as they nurtured me with care in my childhood.”

Allah Ta'ala has commanded all human beings to supplicate for their parents in this manner.

Supplication of the People of the Cave

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا (Kahf - 10)

Transliteration: Rabbana atina mil-ladunka rahmatan wa hayyi’ lana min amrina rashada.

“Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us guidance and correctness in our affairs.”

This supplication was made by the People of the Cave. As a result, Allah Ta'ala accepted it and granted them special protection.

Supplication for Increase in Knowledge

رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا (Ta Ha - 114)

Transliteration: Rabbi zidni ilma.

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

This supplication was commanded by Allah Ta'ala to the Prophet ﷺ himself.

Supplication During Illness

رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(Al-Anbiya - 83)

Transliteration: Rabbahu anni massaniya ad-durru wa anta arhamur-raahimeen.

“My Lord, indeed affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”

This was the supplication of Ayyub عليه السلام. By its blessing, all his hardships were removed.

Supplication in Distress and Hardship

لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ (Al-Anbiya - 87)

Transliteration: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen.

“There is no deity except You. Glory be to You. Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.”

This was the supplication of Yunus عليه السلام when he was in severe distress, swallowed by a great fish by the command of Allah.

Allah Ta'ala then stated regarding its acceptance:

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (Al-Anbiya - 88)

Transliteration: Fastajabna lahu wa najjainahu minal-ghammi wa kazalika nunjil-mu’mineen.

“So We responded to him and delivered him from distress. And thus do We deliver the believers.”

This indicates that when a believer recites this supplication, it is granted acceptance.

Supplication When Bidding Farewell to a Traveller

فَاللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَافِظًا ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ (Yusuf - 64)

Transliteration: Fallahu khairun hafizan, wa huwa arhamur-raahimeen.

“So Allah is the best Guardian, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
